SpecialChem / Jun 25, 2004

Albemarle Corporation (NYSE: ALB) the world's leading manufacturer of flame retardants, and China Antimony Chemicals Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Minmetals Nonferrous Metals Co., Ltd. (Minmetals), have formed a strategic alliance to market antimony trioxide in the United States.

Under the alliance, Albemarle will use its existing sales channels to sell BRIGHTSUN(TM) antimony trioxide produced by Minmetals' ISO9001 certified manufacturing facility in Nanning, Guangxi, China. Minmetals is one of the leading producers of antimony trioxide in the world.

Antimony trioxide is a highly effective flame retardant synergist used with bromine-based flame retardants such as Albemarle's SAYTEX(R) flame retardants, other halogen-based flame retardants and halogen-containing resins. Antimony trioxide is also used as a polymer catalyst for the production of polyesters.

"The strategic alliance is a perfect fit for both Albemarle's and Minmetals' current businesses," said Albemarle Flame Retardants Division Vice President Luc Van Muylem. "It will bring more value to both companies' customers."

Albemarle Corporation, headquartered in Richmond, Va., is a leading producer of specialty chemicals for consumer electronics, pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals, industrial products, and construction and packaging materials. The company serves customers in more than 120 countries, generating annual revenue of more than $1 billion.
