Covestro Waste Management Recycling Technologies IFAT Munich 2024Covestro to present its waste management and recycling technologies at the IFAT Munich 2024 trade fair from May 13 to 17 in Munich.

The company's aim is to close its material cycles and recycle more plastic waste. To this end, Covestro for example recently created the legal requirements to purchase plastic waste itself and recycle it by registering as a waste dealer.

Broad Portfolio of Recycling Technologies

In addition to various exhibits showing current examples of recycling solutions and partnerships, Covestro uses the world's leading trade fair for the waste management industry to explain mechanical and chemical recycling technologies in order to create transparency and strengthen confidence in the efficiency of such developments.

The company has many years of experience in the mechanical recycling of polycarbonates and thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU) and only last year significantly expanded its capacities for the processing of mechanically recycled products in China and Thailand.

For Covestro, chemical processes include chemolysis as a method for recovering raw materials under the influence of chemicals, smart pyrolysis at elevated temperatures and enzymatic recycling, in which microorganisms break down the chemical bonds. What they have in common is that the polymer molecules are converted back into the original raw materials, from which new products of the same quality as new goods can be created. The processes will be clearly explained at the Covestro stand on the "Recycling Wheel".

At IFAT, Covestro will also show how circular solutions in its product portfolio are becoming even more recognizable for customers. With the “CQ” concept, Covestro emphasizes the alternative raw material base for its products if it is at least 25%. “CQ” stands for Circular Intelligence. With the new recycling technologies, the CQ portfolio is now growing even further. This includes the reuse of polyurethane mattress foam components, the first chemical recycling initiative marketed by Covestro under the name Evocycle® CQ.

Shaping Partnerships for Recyclate Portfolio

A paradigm shift and intensive cooperation along the value chain are needed for the transition to a circular economy to succeed. The chemical and waste management industries in particular must continue to grow together in the future in order to create synergies and develop solutions together,” says CEO, Dr. Markus Steilemann. “With innovative recycling technologies and now also as an authorized waste dealer, Covestro is well equipped for this. We can now actively shape partnerships for waste management and a recyclate portfolio in the EU ourselves.”

IFAT brings together many established players in waste management. In addition to making new contacts, we also want to position chemical recycling, which is often still viewed skeptically, as an integral part of a modern circular economy. By participating in IFAT, Covestro is demonstrating to many stakeholders the contributions our company wants to make to circular integration,” says Tara Nitz, manager, Global Circular Economy and responsible for IFAT cooperation at Covestro.
