Additives-advanced-circular-economy With the plastic industry's focus shifting towards circularity and the implementation of various strategies to achieve it along the entire value chain, global suppliers and consumers have become more conscious about the products available in the market and their ability to meet the circularity goals.

There have been several new additives and pigments, of late, that help to enhance recyclability of materials in a circular economy. Additives can be used to modify the properties plastics to make them more compatible with the recycling process.

These additives cover a range of aspects in circular product developments, as some directly aid in enhancing recycling processes by increasing recycled content, while others help in improving stabilization of various recyclates, or in purification of plastics pyrolysis feed, and then there are some masterbatches that are NIR transparent that ease the sorting of plastics with NIR sensors in recycling plants.

Let’s have a look at these commercially available additives that takes the plastics industry a step closer in achieving advanced circular economy in true sense.

Additives for Improved Recycling

  • Avient Unveils New Polyolefin Antioxidant for Recycling
Avient Corporation introduces new polyolefin antioxidants, Cesa™ Nox A4R additives for recycling and PCR color prediction service for polyolefins and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resins.

Avient’s new Cesa™ Nox A4R additives for recycling are based on a special formulation that protects post-consumer polyolefins against oxidation, which can lead to defects like black spots on surface, gels and discoloration.

  • SI Group’s New Additives Portfolio Enhances Plastics Recycling
SI Group unveiled its EVERCYCLE™ additives platform for plastics recycling at the K 2022 exhibition in Germany. SI Group's EVERCYCLE™ additives brand is a new platform of products that support a more circular economy based on resource conservation, enhanced recycling, and innovative technologies.

For PET recycling and converting, EVERCYCLE™ products offer process stability, color control, and reduced acetaldehyde levels. For polyolefin recycling, benefits include process stabilization and performance enhancement, enabling increased recycled content.

  • Brüggemann Presented New Additives for Polyolefin Recyclates’ Stabilization at K 2022
At K 2022, Brüggemann presented three new additives for improved stabilization of polyolefin recyclates. These additives result in recyclates with very good mechanical and processing properties, making the need for the addition of virgin material unnecessary.

All BRUGGOLEN® R grades are supplied as dust-free additive blends in compacted granule form for easy and homogeneous distribution. With the newly introduced BRUGGOLEN® R grades, Brüggemann complements its broad portfolio of additives for mechanical recycling of polyamides.

  • Milliken’s New Viscosity Modifier Enhances Melt Flow Rate of rPP
Milliken & Company, used K 2022 trade fair to introduce the latest DeltaFlow™ viscosity modifier for recycled polypropylene (rPP), based on latest viscosity-modification chemistry. At the K Show the company showcased our broad portfolio of plastic additives and colorants, with a special attention to new grades of DeltaFlow™.

DeltaFlow™ enables rPP to feasibly replace virgin resin in many end-use applications. This allows brands to use more rPP in their products, thereby helping them to meet their sustainability goals.

Masterbatches for Sorting Plastics in Recycling Stream

  • ECKART Develops Pigment Solution for Automatic Sorting of Plastics
Automatic plastic sorting systems in recycling plants work with NIR sensors that do not always correctly identify certain colorants such as conventional silver shades. With NIR Silver, ECKART develops a pigment solution that is tailored to the needs of automatic sorting.

The pigments are easy to process in all conventional plastics and particularly in combination with post-consumer resins, NIR Silver offers the packaging industry an interesting opportunity to further strengthen its efforts with regard to sustainability.

  • Ampacet Launches Black Masterbatch for Flexible Packaging Applications
Ampacet adds REC-NIR-BLACK™ PE 512 for black flexible applications to its carbon-free REC-NIR-BLACK™ masterbatch range.

REC-NIR-BLACK™ masterbatches are near-infrared (NIR) transparent to allowsorting with near-infrared optical sensors. The reuse and recycling of black packaging waste supports circular economy initiatives.

Catalysts & Adsorbents for Pyrolysis Feed Purification

  • Clariant Introduces Catalysts & Adsorbents for Purification of Plastic Pyrolysis Oil
Clariant launches an innovative portfolio of flexible, custom solutions for the emerging market of chemical plastics recycling. The new HDMax® catalysts and Clarit™ adsorbents are designed for the purification of pyrolysis oil made from hard-to-recycle mixed plastic waste.

The launch is another milestone for Clariant’s EcoCircle initiative, established throughout the company to support the transition from a one-way plastics value chain toward a circular plastics economy.
