Thomas Swan Products Approval USDA BioPreferred ProgramIn April, three Thomas Swan products were approved by the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) BioPreferred® program.

Thomas Swan's Casamod™ 450 (72% biobased), Casamod™ 550, and Casamod™ 650 (97% biobased) are additives used in the synthetic rubber industry. These products can now display a unique USDA label indicating the percentage of biobased content in each product.

Exploring New Ways to Advance Sustainability Efforts

Third-party verification for a product's biobased content is administered through the USDA BioPreferred® program, which aims to increase the development, purchase, and use of biobased products.

Antonella Pagliarulo, product development manager, performance polymer solutions, said, “We are delighted to have earned the USDA Certified Biobased Product Label for three of our products. At Thomas Swan, we are constantly exploring new ways to advance our sustainability efforts and minimize our environmental impact. This certification is not only a testament to our commitment to developing a biobased product portfolio, but it also allows our customers to choose more sustainable options for their manufacturing processes, helping them meet their own sustainability targets.

The USDA Certified Biobased Product Label displays a product's biobased content, which is the portion of a product that comes from a renewable source, such as plant, animal, marine, or forestry feedstocks. Utilising renewable biobased materials displaces the need for non-renewable petroleum-based chemicals. Biobased products are cost-comparative, readily available, and perform as well as or better than their conventional counterparts.

We applaud Thomas Swan & Co. Ltd. for earning the USDA Certified Biobased Product Label ”, said, Vernell Thompson, USDA BioPreferred Program. “The label is intended to help spur economic development, create new jobs, and provide new markets for farm commodities. But the label also makes it easier for consumers and federal buyers to locate biobased products and consider planet-friendlier options during purchase decisions. By having their products become USDA Certified Biobased, Thomas Swan & Co. Ltd. joins an expanding list of businesses combatting inaccurate marketing claims and the practice of greenwashing, while also contributing to a thriving bioeconomy that decreases our reliance on petroleum.
