Plasticizers are the most common additives used in the plastic industry.
They are also usually cheaper than other additives used in polymer processing. Plasticizers are low volatile organic substances added to plastic compounds to improve their flexibility, extensibility and processability. They increase the flow and thermoplasticity of the material by decreasing the viscosity of the polymer melts, their glass transition temperature (Tg), melting temperature (Tm) and elasticity modulus of the finished products.
There are several general chemical families of plasticizers that are used for polymer modification. Among them, the most commonly used are: Phthalates (orthophthalates - LMW, HMW; terephthalates), Adipates, Benzoates, Citrates, Epoxidized Oils (ESBO, ELO),
Phosphates, Polyesters, Trimellitates and more.
