Di(tert.butyl) peroxide. It acts as an initiator (radical source) in the polymerization of monomers and peroxidic crosslinking agent for polyethylene (HDPE and LDPE) with the rheology control of polypropylene. It appears as a colorless, mobile liquid, with molar mass of 146.2 g/mol. In case of polymer crosslinking, it provides special advantages like scorch free, volatile & odor free decomposition products and no blooming of the vulcanisate surface. In case of CR (controlled-rheology) polypropylene, the degradation (e.g. in an extruder) lowers the molecular weight mean, and permits easier (re-) processing of the polypropylene. The melt-flow index of the controlled rheology is dependent on the peroxide levels employed.
