Fluoropolymers as Polymer Processing Aid (PPA)

Fluoro based polymers processing aids are additives used to increase productivity and quality of PE materials during extrusion. These additives have the advantage to not compromise on PE performance as only few hundred ppm are needed.

Fluoropolymers as Polymer Processing Aid

How does it work?

Benefits

Benefits of using PPAs

The new PPAs impact the quality of PE resins as well as the films, including laminating films. Resin producers, compounders, and master batchers are the main potential users of these films. Many film and pipe producers are looking for higher productivity with better quality films.

With these high-quality PPAs, it is feasible to:

  • Reduce costs
  • Optimize processing ability/performance balance
  • Enhance the quality of PE resins (pellets) quality

Fluoropolymers Polymer Processing Aids offer higher efficiency and similar level of performances can be obtained at lower concentrations (up to 50% lower than a traditional PPA) - without compromising on gel formation and die buildup. These benefits are especially appreciated in highly demanding lamination and surface protection applications. Optimize processing ability/performance balance

The development of high performance PE grades is always a compromise with extrusion ability.

With PPA formulation, new PE grades are designed with the minimum molecular weight to reach the optimum ratio of mechanical properties/ processing behavior, as illustrated on figure 1.

High mechanical performance & acceptable processing ability with PPA formulation
Figure 1: High molecular weight chain provides higher mechanical performances: stress cracking, impact, tear resistance, but reduces processing ability/ Low Mw chain:
improved processing ability but reduced mechanical performances. The addition of PPA eliminates issues at high molecular weight (deteriorated extrusion, etc...)

Enhance PE resins (pellets) quality

The high-performing PPA grades have been developed for film production and also show good results in enhancing the quality of polyolefin resins through their action during the finishing part of the manufacturing process:

Quality of polyolefin resins

Reduced Sharkskin on pellets

The addition of PPA in the extrusion phase of the PE resin production avoids the melt fracture if shear rate is below 800s-1.

By reducing melt fracture during PE finishing, the pellets of polyethylene produced does not have any default such as sharkskin defects hence reducing transportation or storage issues.

Reduced gel formation

With the fine dispersion of novel PPAs, there is no risk of gel creation in the polyolefin resin. Hence, there is a better production of higher film quality.
