What is the role of dispersants?

Dispersants adsorb onto a particle surface, prevent re-agglomeration and stabilize the dispersion.

What are the functions of a good dispersant?
  1. Wetting of the particles
    Particle to particle attraction causes the viscosity of a pigmented system to increase. The presence of a polymeric layer around the particle reduces these attractive forces.
  2. Reduction in particle size
    Reducing particle size and narrowing the particle distribution can provide several benefits: a significant positive influence on coloristic properties, as well as gloss, transparency/opacity and speck reduction.
  3. Stabilization of the particle
    The presence of a stabilizing layer around the particle prevents them from flocculating (joining together). Preventing flocculation can help stop many problems occurring in a system and can result in more efficient grinds.
