Enter 2018 World Materials Forum Start-up Challenge for a Chance to Win 50,000 EUR

What is the WMF Start Up Challenge & Award?


The WMF Start Up Challenge is an opportunity to present innovative solutions to the major actors of the material industry from all around the world in one of the following six domains:

  • Materials Composition
  • Product Design 
  • Internet of Things
  • 3D Manufacturing
  • Mobility Systems
  • Waste Management 

12 nominees will be selected by an international jury that includes experts in scientific, societal, and business matters on April 20th. Nominees will be announced and notified on April 27, 2018. Each of the 12 nominated companies will receive a free booth at WMF, as well as free transportation, accommodations and WMF registration for the company CEO. The World Materials Forum will be held on June 28-29 at Hôtel de Ville de Nancy in Nancy, France.

The winners will be announced during WMF Gala Dinner on June 28th. The winning company CEO will be awarded 50,000 euros award by the Jury President, Victoire de Margerie. A second company will be designated by the jury and another award of 50,000 euros will be presented by the CEO of EIT Raw Materials.

In addition, the jury may choose to designate other companies for special mentions or additional awards...

Why submit your application through SpecialChem?


Submitting your application through SpecialChem will give you additional exposure of your non-confidential presentation through our websites, in our newsletters, and through SpecialChem social media channels. Plus, we will give you the opportunity to host a short 3-minute video on our website to promote your non-confidential information. Further, should you win the challenge, we will publish an article or case study and even consider an online webinar promoting your technology in Q3 2018.

Am I eligible to apply?


If you are a start-up with less than 50 permanent staffs and a proven economic viability, seize your chance to win 50,000 euro prize for your breakthrough innovation in one of the above-mentioned areas.

How do I apply?


Applicants should submit a 5-page maximum PDF presentation that includes a description of their breakthrough innovation, a simplified three-year business plan, and information related to the company structure including capital and shareholding information.

Deadlines to keep in mind:

  • Opening: 8 January 2018 
  • Deadline to apply: 23 March 2018 
  • Selection of 12 nominees: 20 April in Paris 
  • Announcement of nominees: 27 April 2018 
  • Presentation of 12 nominees and announcement of Awards: 28 June 2018 during WMF Gala Dinner
