NatureWorks Introduces Biopolymer Grade for Heat Resistant 3D Filament

Published on 2017-04-18. Author : SpecialChem

MINNETONKA, Minn. -- NatureWorks has introduced Ingeo™ 3D870, a new cost-effective grade for 3D filament manufacturers looking for innovative means of expanding sales into the industrial prototyping and additive manufacturing market. Feedback from filament manufacturers who have trialed the product commend the ease of processing Ingeo 3D870 and printer manufacturers praise its printability; both have uniformly said there are no materials available today that provide this combination of superior filament processing, printability, and printed part performance characteristics.

3D Printing Monofilament – High Heat and Impact Grade

PLA 3D Grades Vs. ABS 3D Grades

With its 3D series of Ingeo grades, NatureWorks is the supplier of PLA to the 3D filament manufacturing industry. Every filament carrying NatureWorks’ Ingeo brand name has passed a defined set of tests to assure the quality of the product. Quality filament ensures reliable printing and predictable performance. NatureWorks developed Ingeo 3D870 to meet the growing demand by industrial companies for a material that combines the properties of ABS and the printability of Ingeo PLA.

Ingeo 3D870 - Properties

  • Grade developed for manufacturing 3D printer monofilament
  • Engineered to deliver improved heat-resistance
  • High impact strength to 3D printed parts
  • This formulated grade achieves thermal and mechanical properties similar to ABS
  • Monofilaments made with Ingeo 3D870 provide excellent 3D printing
  • Good adhesion to build plates, less warping or curling, and low odor.

Ingeo 3D870 complies with chemical inventory listings in key markets in North America, Asia and Europe, which expands sales opportunities for filament manufacturers. Parts produced with the formulation exceed ABS 3D parts in impact strength and, with post-print annealing, rivals ABS heat resistance.

Ingeo General Purpose PLA is good for many applications including 3D printing, but 3D850 and 3D870 have been designed specifically for 3D printing. Building on reliable, easy printability, these two grades offer good UV color lightfastness, low yellow index, and can be crystallized to realize additional heat and impact properties. 3D870 specifically was designed for impact strength that’s required in industrial applications.

Filament manufacturers interested in learning more about the ease of processing Ingeo 3D870 into filament, its printability, and ABS-rivaling performance are invited to contact their NatureWorks representative or local distributor.
