BRB-Silane BRB has launched two new silanes: BRB Silanil® 164 and BRB Silanil® 299. The trimethoxysilyl inorganic group in both the additives works as a water repellent agent.

BRB Silanil® 164 - Reactive Alkylalkoxysilane

BRB Silanil® 164 is a reactive alkylalkoxysilane containing a long alkyl chain of -C16H33 (hexdecyl) and trimethoxysilyl inorganic group. The hexadecyl group of BRB Silanil® 164 is a hydrophobic hydrocarbon chain delivering excellent water repellency features and forms a protective surface surrounding inorganic particles, thus it is used to modify the surface of construction materials, such as concrete and inorganic masonry substrates.

The long alkyl chains also improve the dispersibility of fillers in organic paints and polymers when it is used as hydrophobizing agent on fillers which improved the mechanical properties.

Specific Applications

Water Repellency Agent for Construction Materials - BRB Silanil® 164 can be used as water repellency agent for bricks, stone, concrete, inorganic masonry substrates, e.g. highway bridge decks, airport runways, etc. which the containing mineral particles are able to react with trimethoxysilyl inorganic group in BRB Silanil® 164.

Mineral Filler Treatment - BRB Silanil® 164 can be used as hydrophobizing agent to treat mineral fillers and pigments. The long alkyl chain of hexadecyl group is able to improve compatibility between mineral fillers and organic polymers in application of coatings, adhesives and plastics providing great dispersion, higher filler loading, better mechanical properties and also water uptake reduction.

Additives for Polyolefin Compounding
- BRB Silanil® 164 can improve toughness of composites which contains mineral fillers, e.g. wollastonite and polypropylene. It also increases capability of high filler loading by compatibility performance. Moreover, BRB Silanil® 164 can be used as processing aid additive in moisture crosslinked compounds, e.g. XLPE wire and cable, to reduce premature crosslink which may be called scorch retardant and prolong shelf life of compounds.

BRB Silanil® 164 is soluble in non-polar organic solvents e.g. petroleum ether, toluene, xylene, hexane, etc. but it is not soluble in water.

BRB Silanil® 299- Reactive Alkoxysilane

BRB Silanil® 299 is a reactive alkoxysilane containing trimethoxysilyl inorganic group and phenyl group. It is easily hydrolyzed by water and moisture in the atmosphere by changing the trimethoxysilyl inorganic group into three reactive silanol groups which bond inorganic substances and able to crosslink each other to form network or bigger molecule.

The phenyl group able to withstand oxidation and reduction and thus provides thermal stability and also hydrophobic character to the modified products. The hydrolysis reaction of phenyltrimethoxysilane is faster than phenyltriethoxysilane.

Specific Applications

Hydrophobizing agent for mineral fillers and pigments - The phenyl group of BRB Silanil® 299 can improve compatibility between mineral fillers and organic polymers in application of coatings, adhesives and plastics providing greater dispersion, higher filler loading, better mechanical properties and also lower water uptake.

Sol-gel application
- BRB Silanil® 299 can be used as a precursor for sol-gel process. It can also be used together with other alkoxysilanes such as methyltrimethoxysilane.

BRB Silanil® 299 is also used as a component in the production of silicone polymers and other organosilicon substances.
