Biocides / Antimicrobial Agents
Addition of plasticizers, lubricants and starch fillers makes the plastic vulnerable to microbial growth. The development of microbes like bacteria, algae and fungi can impair the aesthetics, hygiene, mechanical and electrical insulating properties and reduce the life of the plastic. Adding biocide/antimicrobial agent makes the plastic resistant to biodegradation. Polysulphides and polyester based polyurethanes are known to be more susceptible to microbial attack . Biocides/ antimicrobial agents main families are fungicides, bactericides, algaecides and antifouling agents.
