Di(tert.butyl) peroxide. It acts as an initiator (radical source) in polymerisation of monomers, crosslinking agent for polyethylene (HDPE and LDPE) and rheology control of polypropylene. It appears as a colorless, mobile liquid and has a molar mass of 146.2 g/mol. It is conductive and thus decreasing the risk for electrostatic discharge significantly. At below 150°C no premature crosslinking (scorch) occurs along with it shows advantages like odour free decomposition products, and no blooming of the vulcanisate surface. The high volatility of the product demands that closed systems are employed with e.g. injection moulders, compression moulds and heated pressure pipes. Degradation (e.g. in an extruder) lowers the molecular weight mean, and permits easier (re-)processing of the polypropylene. The melt-flow index of the controlled rheology is dependent on the peroxide levels employed.
