Additives and New Processes Improve rPET Properties

SpecialChem / Oct 12, 2009

Condensation polymers like PET and PA degrade during melt processing, reducing molecular weight (measured by intrinsic viscosity or IV), which generally corresponds to lower mechanical properties. Recycled PET (rPET) applications such as fibers can use cleaned flake or pellets as-it-is, but other applications require improved IV and/or contaminant removal. For example, food-contact bottle applications require improved IV (0.72-0.74 dL/g minimum) and removal of contaminants such as acetaldehyde. Therefore, new processes & additives are being developed to meet these requirements.
