Benzoate plasticizer for flexible PVC injection moulded toy applications

A new benzoate plasticizer, Benzoflex® 2888, has been developed for injection moulded flexible toy applications. Jiamin Lang and Bruce Stanhope of Velsicol Chemical Corporation discuss formulation and performance characteristics of injection moulding applications using Benzoflex® 2888 in comparison to a standard phthalate plasticizer, DINP, as well as toxicological and environmental considerations. They argue that the material is a good alternative plasticizer when used in flexible toys due to its processing ease, final product performance, low toxicity and fast biodegradation. A plasticizer is a substance incorporated into a material to increase its workability, flexibility, softness, and distensibility1,2. Plasticizers are the largest volume additives used in the plastics industry. The majority (about 90%) of plasticizers consumption is in polyvinyl chloride (PVC). During the past several years, di-isononyl phthalate (DINP) has been one of the major general purpose plasticizers used in flexible PVC toys.
