It is true that one should never judge a book by its cover! But this is not applicable in the case of consumer products. How a product is packaged, more often than not, determines its value and success in the market. Further, the importance of packaging increases manifold when it comes to packaging of food, and more so in the case of fresh-cut food. Many factors, chief being the negative effects of processing and the presence of micro-organisms, make fresh-cut fruits especially vulnerable and jeopardize the quality and freshness of the product at the time of purchase. This industry is faced with large-scale spoilage and it has been found that close to 40% of the food products world-wide end up being discarded! This is where innovative packaging can play a key role and overcome the problem of unnecessary wastage of food.
