Rebounding Plastics Additives Market

SpecialChem / Sep 25, 2007

The global plastics additives industry is well into recovery as it continues to hit record sales with revenue close to US $22 billion for 2006 following a record year of US $21 billion in 2005. The industry had encountered a difficult period during late 1990's-early 2000's with severe margin compression as serious price erosion was experienced during escalating energy prices. Additionally economic slowdown in the plastics market coupled with transfer of production to emerging markets, and the development of multiple regulatory pressures further added to industry pressures. With global additives consumption projected to grow 4% annually through 2010 to reach a volume of almost 28 billion lbs., plastics additives are a significant business for the specialty chemicals industry. Maintaining this growth however will not be without with a number of challenges. While sales are closely tied to plastics demand which continues to be strong, additives suppliers are also impacted by a number of other forces.
