What are anti-scorch systems and why are they needed in Polyol & PUR foams?

Polyurethane (PUR) flexible foams represent one of the major segments of the polyurethane market. PUR foams are prone to degradation through different paths: thermal degradation, thermo-oxidative degradation, photo-oxidation and photolysis. The combination of these factors causes PUR foams degradation (scorch) which results in discoloration, loss of the foam’s mechanical properties and, in extreme cases, fire.

To preserve foam’s mechanical properties and aesthetics and for a safe foaming production, the use of anti-scorch stabilizers is required. Anti-scorch stabilizers are based on synergistic combinations of antioxidants and process stabilizers, providing the best protection at the lowest loading.
