What are the benzotriazole UV absorbers good for?

Tech Paper | Supplied by BASF

Synthetic and natural polymers vary in their sensitivity to environmental aging factors. Among them, UV radiation of sunlight releases high enough energy to break the chemical bonds of most polymers and initiate their degradation. The cleaved sites further react with O2 and the so called photo-oxidation takes place leading to an acceleration of the physical properties losses. Typically, aged Plastics will show yellowing, surface cracking, embrittlement, reduction of gloss or chalking. Therefore, Light stabilizers are used to mitigate the damages caused by photo degradation and maintain the polymer properties to fit with their service life expectations.
