INOVYN to Investigate Options for Sustainable Methanol Production

Published on 2020-05-11. Edited By : SpecialChem

Inovyn-methanolINOVYN has committed to play a major role in investigating options for sustainable methanol production as part of the ‘Power to Methanol’ project at Antwerp, Belgium.

Joint Feasibility Study for Methanol Production

INOVYN, a member of a 7 strong consortium comprising industrial and business partners, will contribute to a joint feasibility study for the production of methanol from captured carbon dioxide and sustainably generated hydrogen.

The carbon dioxide is captured by 'Carbon Capture and Utilization', through which CO2 emissions are partially recovered and then combined with hydrogen generated from renewable energy. For each ton of methanol produced at least one ton of CO2 emissions would be avoided.

INOVYN Plans to Build Demonstration Plant

After the success of the study, INOVYN also plans to build an 8,000 tpa industrial-scale demonstration plant at the company’s chemical manufacturing complex at Lillo. This will be the first of its kind for Belgium and the methanol produced will be used by chemical companies in the port of Antwerp cluster.

Geir Tuft, CEO of INOVYN comments, “This is a very exciting project and an excellent fit with our sustainability strategy, which includes pursuing options for alternative energy and the sustainable, lower carbon production of chemicals. Specifically, INOVYN will contribute its expertise in hydrogen production and electrolysis to the project, and has identified a suitable location for the proposed demonstration plant at our Lillo Site.
