VLCI: New Bio-based Workflow for HSP Determination of Solvents

Alongside the increasing demand for bio-based alternatives, the interest in predicting and improving ingredients compatibility via Hansen Solubility Parameters (HSP) keeps growing in the formulation industry. In this regard, VLCI has launched a bio-based workflow for HSP determinations.

In partnership with 11 suppliers, it has gathered over 20 bio-based solvents spread across the HSP space. Besides compatibility predictions, this approach offers straightforward and practical insights about the applicability of the bio-based solvents to all industries, including numerous solvent blends possibilities.

Applications & Project Examples


  • Solvents outside the solubility sphere of a product can be blended to reach HSP’s within the sphere. By this means, toxic or environmentally unsustainable solvents can be replaced by blends of non-hazardous and/or bio-based solvents.
  • Dispersants can be matched with specific solid particles for the preparation of optimally stabilized suspensions.
  • Film formation of acrylic dispersions can be enhanced via the effective selection of coalescing agents.
  • Solubility of pharmaceutical actives can be significantly improved.
