Protecting Carpets with Antimicrobials

SpecialChem / Robert Brentin – Mar 20, 2012

As a follow up on last month’s comprehensive article on What's the latest in biocides?, SpecialChem takes a look at the potential use of antimicrobials in new market segments. With established uses in many textile markets, the residential carpet market is a new market segment for antimicrobials. And doesn’t everyone want a clean, odor-free, long-lasting carpet in their house?

The treatment with a proper antimicrobial should reduce the overall numbers of bacteria and fungi present in carpet. This does not preclude routine care and maintenance. Proper maintenance should be conducted per the manufacturer’s suggested care regardless of the addition of an antimicrobial to a carpet.

There is at least one carpet manufacturer that is already moving forward with the development of residential carpet treated with an antimicrobial system. The Bliss® carpet brand from Beaulieu of America uses the Silver Release™ antimicrobial carpet treatment in their Healthy Home product line to inhibit the growth of odor and stain causing bacteria, mold and mildew. Silver Release™ works to inhibit growth through microscopic silver, zinc and/or copper ions. Moisture initiates the release of ions from the fibers which then bind to the microbes, inactivating them.
